Young Love

The other day I found Brooke making believe and playing house with Brendan. My head snapped around and I quickly asked "Who are you playing with?" (Brendan wasn't really there...) She BLUSHED and smiled and shyly repeated Brendan. I probably made ...no lets make that- I definitely made too big of a deal of it and she won't ever want to talk to me again about boys lol...but I just couldn't believe the blushing and smiling that the mention of his named had caused!

So today while working in my classroom, my head was wandering and this topic of Brendan came up. Could it be an attraction...connection at this young age? I mean obviously it is all innocent but it is amazing to me how she just picks one boy amongst the 30-40 she knows (scott has a lot of friends...with a lot of kids!) So being the person I am I probed and asked a few innocent questions just to help me understand. What is it that makes someone genuinely and innocently find some type of connection with one rather than another.

Me: Hey, Brooke maybe we can invite Brendan and his brother over to the pool next week.
Brooke: (whips her head to look at me) Brendan?
Me: Yes, and his brother.
Brooke: Okay but I want to play with just Brendan.
Me: Why? Is he nice to you? Why do you like to play with him?
Brooke: He will like my shoes. I know. (okay..too cute)
Me: You think he will like your new shoes?
Brooke: Yes, he will. I know. He plays with me and we play together.
Me: So you both like to play together.
Brooke: Yes and I smile when I play with him. We laugh like this..(a very hearty laugh)...thats what we do.
Me: (all i could do is stare....)
Brooke: I think he wants to watch my princess and the pauper movie. Mom could you tell him.
Me: I think he would like to play in the pool but we could ask him if he would like to watch the movie instead. We'll see next week.
Brooke: He'll watch my movie. (lol...either she's real confident in him...or very demanding lol)
Brooke: He'll watch my movie and we will laugh. And then we will shoot the bugs. He showed me shooting the bugs.
Me: He showed you to shoot?

I believe that qualifies as my first real mother-daughter conversation. Now if love and relationships can be that easy: guy loves your movies (or will sit there and watch even though he doesn't love it) even if it has a princess theme, all you do is laugh hearty laughs when you are together, and he makes you smile when you are together. Done!
